Client: Kurt Mehlenbacher, Composer
Completion Date: 2009
Project Type: website
In the Wild: Visit the current website

Project Description:
Being a fellow artist, Kurt had some unique ideas about how his website should be assembled. For example, he preferred, as much as possible, to eliminate the use of boxes to contain and organize elements on the page. Furthermore, the site needed to conform to his personal method of branding his art music. That is, the design elements should be seemingly in contrast—perhaps paradoxical—with what they are displaying.

To this end, I created the site with a highly contrasting, perhaps jarring, color combination of orange on blue. The backing for the header text is done using a grungy style brush that—once paired with the header text—appears haphazard and organic. The header text itself is set as a mask making it appear almost stencil-like. Placing the text slightly askew just ties the look together.

In addition to the visual style, Kurt needed a way to display past and upcoming concerts for his works. To accomplish this, the GigPress plugin was modified to work with the slightly different requirements for a composer versus a band.

Update:

In late 2009 the site underwent a slight redesign. While the concept remained the same, the layout of some elements were tweaked to make them flow better. In addition, some more graphical elements were added to the site to make it, well, cooler.
